I was excited to be doing a full table & 6 chairs in the Miss Mustard Seed Typewriter. It is such a stunning black. This table and chair set was purchased 13 years ago as newlyweds with nothing to start out with. The story of being brought home to start the journey, and to be the center of where a family grew from 2 to 4 over the years, and now being renewed to carry on for many more years.
I bet this table has some stories of its own to tell as I've watched this family in motion together...it's a beautiful story I am certain!
The family was getting ready to move into their newly purchased home, but prior to moving they wanted to make a few changes to the home. One being to update their table & chairs.
We met one Saturday afternoon at their home so I could look at the table & chairs. I brought a chair home to makeover so she & her husband could see what the finish would look like.
A week passed and I brought the chair to ballet where our girls where rehearsing together.
She took the chair home to show her husband...
Funny that as she came inside the ballet studio, she had this look on her face. Of course I first thought she was gonna say they didn't like the chair. BUT, instead she had spotted a dresser across the street that had FREE written across it....
Whew....they loved the chair, but wanted to add a little more distressing. Easy fix!
Could we save it!?! Well it is free and I can certainly try. We loaded that baby right up into my car & off we went. Ha I turned her into a curbside furniture junkie..mission accomplished :)
Later that week we agreed that I would just come to the new house to work on the table & chairs...it'd be easier than moving the table multiple times. In fact it was good because they had a built in locker storage that they also wanted painted. This way I could work on them simultaneously. I will show that finished project at a later time (still need to add the new hardware & take pictures of the finished piece). But, I will say this much.... I love how awesome it turned out, and I truly don't think that the pictures will do it justice, but we're gonna give it a roll.
A sneak peek..
In the meantime... Take a gander at this transformation!!! I am super in love with how it came out...
When the husband said that it has taken him 13 years to like the table...I took that as a sign he was happy. He even tried to get me to add a Harley Davidson logo in the middle of the table....you can see how well that went over :)
And, when the teenage son came in and said "oh wow it is tricked out"...I knew I had done something right!!
When I originally did the first chair the nail heads just disappeared. I knew they needed to be brought back out.. And, my friend agreed.
I didn't want to just sand them because they were a silvery/pewter color underneath and the wood of the chairs/table when waxed brought out a caramel color...

You can see the nail heads on the table have been rub'n buffed... On the chair the nail heads are barely noticeable. |
So...rub n buff (one of my all time favorite things) came in as my go to... I used Spanish Copper to add some punch.
And, just like that the nail heads had come back to life.
The table & chairs were made over in Miss Mustard Seed Typewriter, distressed, and waxed with CeCe Caldwells dark aging creme.
I certainly believe this table received the face lift it needed to bring it from tired & worn to fresh, updated and stunning! And, now it can carry on to see the new chapter in this journey!
My friend/client had the vision... I just executed and it turned out lovely!! I wish Damian & Nicole much love, happiness, joy and warmth in their new home!! It is just as beautiful as they are as a family...simply gorgeous and I am so happy I got to be just a tiny piece of it!
With much love, happiness & peace ~
Nice job Lynn. Luv the black!
ReplyDeleteI have a table that we bought 20 yrs ago and I don't like it. I want it dark brown. How do you prepare it? Do you just sand the table?
ReplyDeleteHi Helene... I prepped it by wiping it down with a liquid sander deglosser. I purchase it at home depot & it is the Klean Strip brand. It dries quickly.
